Monhegan Island, Maine painting workshop July 18 - 22, 2022
History of Artists and Monhegan Island

Here's your chance to stay and work on the magical, mystical island of Monhegan, long known for creative, spiritual and life altering forces with like minded individuals seeking the essence of oneness and serenity with nature. Experience the ancient romanticism long known to artists, poets, writers and musicians that is Monhegan, the island that time forgot...
Get in touch with your inner creative force in a reality most artists just dream about.

Imagine waking in the morning, looking out your door and everywhere you look is a painting waiting to happen. Paint en plein air in and around  Monhegan Island. Classes will concentrate on capturing the light and atmosphere on location. Emphasis on color temperature and grisaille to simplify outdoor painting. All levels accepted.

En plein air, you are immediately challenged to create a strong composition and get it down before the light changes. This gives you a window of approximately twenty five minutes before the lighting pattern begins to change.

Jacqueline believes the painting experience for her, would not be the same without the use of all five senses- to hear the wind and gulls, to smell and taste the sea air and feel the sun or rain- to truly connect to the spirit of the land. Being a plein air painter forces you to stop and "smell the roses".

Monhegan is wonderful for nature walks, hiking, birding, searching for fairy houses, watching performances in a one room schoolhouse, casual conversations with interesting characters, gourmet dinners, golden sun, panoramic views, silky fog, reading a favorite book near the oceans edge or catching some rays and a snooze (multi tasking), meeting a friend over a latte, sharing your day over dinner, and watching scarlet and cherry vanilla sunsets.

And painting....

Class is held around the village and small coves.
There is considerable walking required. Please let us know if you have physical limitations.
The village is small but,  there are no cars. The only vehicles on Monhegan are the Hotel trucks used for hauling and luggage. The island is 1/2 mi. wide by 1  1/2 mi. long. with 17 miles of trail.

Demonstrations capturing light patterns using grisalle and composition will be emphasized. Critiques will be held for personal growth. Personal critiques can be arranged for some of your current work. Days are spent painting in and around the island which boasts some of the most beautiful vistas , 600 species of wildflowers, 100 species of birds and at 165 feet, the highest headlands on the East Coast!

The workshop is very relaxed, a workshop which will create a safe space for you to be YOU
Why not treat yourself to a fun, learning holiday?

Be sure to check out the accommodations and student  comments and photos page.

If you'd like more info on the island email me your address .

If you are a beginning painter or a studio painter, you are in for a great experience!

The island has two small stores for general merchandise, a library, 3 establishments for dining, 3 walk away food places, a church, a gallery that sells limited art supplies, a one room school house where community events are held, a light house and museum, a few small local craft shops and artist studios.

Should you be extending your stay, there are boats that do tours to other islands.

The island is basically rustic with most homes & cottages using kerosene lamps.
This is a step back in time, the pace is simple and slow and very conducive to creating. Monhegan has been an artist colony for years and the level of art created on and about the island is phenomenal.

  • Supplies should be kept to a comfortable minimum. A complete list be be mailed about 6 weeks prior to the workshop.

  • You may choose to work in Oil, Acrylic, Pastel or Watercolor.

Workshop Title : Problem solving  ‘on your feet’ en plein air painting & Creative Visualizations

Description :
5 day working on location workshop to help you achieve drama in your painting. Demo/lecture each morning.
You will learn to ‘bake the cake ‘ before you applying the frosting.
Wonder why your finished painting bears little resemblance to the excitement you felt when starting your painting ?
Students will should have 2  12x12 or smaller square canvases to work on per day. Typical work day is 9 - 4pm

Creative Visualizations
Sessions incorporated during the workshop for Creative Visualizations. Re-enforce the body/mind connection and learn how your 'filters' work to your advantage.

Goals : Students at the end of a 5 day workshop will be able to recognize a strong composition and see values using grisalle.
This will enable them to make decisions when doing problem solving on their own, painting on location.
Grisaille studies, directly on canvas will enable students to commit to a composition and value plan instead
of constantly adjusting their values and shadows, commonly known as ‘chasing the light’.
This eliminates the also common fragmented, unfocused  painting.

Experience level : Beginner to Advanced

Prerequisite Student Skills:  It is suggested that beginners have the experience of at least one drawing course.

Students Supply their own Materials: The workshop is taught using a limited primary color palette. A complete list of suggested oil & acrylic pigments is mailed before the workshop. Canvas board or stretched canvas 12 x 12 square or smaller.
A support for canvas and carrying materials. Incidental list also mailed.
A painting umbrella is strongly suggested.

Class maximum : 15 students

A message from Molly Delaney, Psy.D

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Actually make that mirror, mirror in my head.....

About a decade ago, scientists discovered a type of neuron which previously had not even been imagined. These neurons are "what some consider both one of the greatest drivers of human progress and one of the prime discoveries in recent neuroscience: mirror neurons. These are neurons in key parts of our brain – the premotor cortex, centers for language, empathy, pain – that fire not only as we perform a certain action but when we watch someone else perform that action. The discovery of this mechanism, made about a decade ago, suggests that everything we watch someone else do, we do as well, on a mental scale." (David Dobbs, Scientific American Mind, June 2006).

As a psychologist and teacher, I have learned the "see one, do one, teach one" method. Attending a workshop such as the one we will have on Monhegan Island will give you the opportunity to explore and strengthen your skills through the marriage of painting and visualization.

Mirror neurons help us learn by integrating new information through observation, a key part of what Jacq provides through her demonstrations. Visualization most likely also engages the mirror neurons, thus enhancing the incorporation of new approaches to our painting while also encouraging creatively developing your own style. And, everyday you will have the opportunity to "do" by painting at gorgeous sites all around Monhegan. Lastly, by being part of a community of painters, you can "learn" by seeing how everyone's style is unique to that individual; thus, encouraging the further development of your own style.

Welcome to Monhegan !

On Monhegan, you'll first be struck by the incredible beauty and the simplicity of the lifestyle. It's romantic and sparse, both at the same time. You don't even have to close your eyes to imagine what  the island would have looked like 50 years ago - 100 years ago...

I've heard tourists remark that the island looks like a set in a movie. Can't you just imagine what it would be like to spend an afternoon sitting by the ocean with the sound of the waves and the seabirds ? Take a walk up to the lighthouse, where there's a Museum with the history of the island and a Monhegan artist exhibit, or an evening stroll up that same hill where it really feels like you can reach up and touch the stars.  After the second day, you'll feel so at home, like you've been there for a week or two.A trip to the backside of the island, is a trip we like to include, at least for a half day's painting session - it's like a whole other island back there with headlands at 165 ft, the highest on the east coast - you may even spot a whale or two !

Address both the physical and subconscious chapters in 'your book on painting.'

The atmosphere is relaxed and your learning curve is shortened with creative visualizations. We've found in the past that these sessions hasten the quieting of the conscious mind, so that right brain learning commences more easily. More than that, you'll find the workshop demos and the work of the other participants shared at critiques in an atmosphere fostering your creativity, will allow you to bring your work forward in a new exciting way !

Day's end may find you enjoying one of the unique dinner offerings on the island or perhaps a trip to Shermie's Fish House Market, where we have our annual Lobster on the beach dinner while watching the sunset. A tradition on most islands is to watch the sun go down, and Monhegan is no exception and of course, the sunsets we're planning for you are spectacular.

The workshop on the tiny island of Monhegan is so much fun, it'll keep you smiling for the rest of the year. What are you waiting for ? Summer will be here soon - is this the year you'll join us ?

Still hesitating ? Let me leave you with this thought...

whether you're a beginner or advanced artist -  come with an open mind and...

in just 5 days you can learn a new way of seeing

in just 5 days you can learn a new way of thinking

in just 5 days you can find your 'painting language'

in just 5 days you can find your creativity & excitement again

in just 5 days you can make new lifelong friends

I've seen it over and over again...

One deep breath and a 'yes, I'm going to do this !' can change your life !

what you can expect....

The workshop concentrates on the plein air genre.
All painting is done outdoors.
Two helpful critiques are scheduled during the week, as well as demos each morning.

The workshop is about creativity - using your own voice in paint.
Building blocks that are emphasized are

  •  The importance of having a strong starting composition
  • (looking for strong leading lines) Finding a pleasing pattern that excites you !)

  • Using a value plan to cement your composition,
and being in tune to the evolving of your painting when a part of your composition no longer serves your vision.
  • Aerial perspective is an important part of plein air painting and we will discuss the various ways you can address
         this in your painting.

  • Painting is about your interpretation of what's before you and we'll also discuss how other artists
have learned to follow their vision.

  • Paintings that convey emotion, are paintings where you have taken advantage of your unique filters,
because no one else can see something in the exact way you can.

There is much more involved in this workshop, but if you're intrigued to learn more, sign up now
to join us on this creative retreat.
